Full Route, Timing & the “Mosal” Story Behind Why Lord Jagannath Loves Ahmedabad
Ask anyone from Ahmedabad about Rath Yatra, and they will tell you about the golden Rath coming out of Jamalpur at 7 am, the streets of old Amdavad dyed orange, and thousands of people chanting “Jai Jagannath”. Everyone knows this Rath Yatra. It’s the one shown on television every year.
But here’s something you didn’t know before. Ahmedabad has not one but three Rath yatras celebrated on the very same day, in the very same city, along with their separate routes, separate crowds, and their own story
If you were born and brought up in Ahmedabad and have known only the route of Jamalpur until now, here’s to you.
What’s the Point of Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad at All?
Rath Yatra traditionally takes place in Puri, Odisha. It is believed that Lord Jagannath does not remain inside the temple waiting for people to come to him.
Once a year, He steps out with his brother Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra, riding through the streets so that everyone, rich or poor, capable or non-capable, can have His darshan without any discrimination.
In 1878, Ahmedabad got its first Rath Yatra after a saint named Narsimhadas had a dream of Lord Jagannath asking to be taken out into the city. That first procession from the Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur has now run for 149 years straight, making Ahmedabad’s Rath Yatra the second largest in India after Puri.
The “Mosal” Story: Why Ahmedabad Calls Itself the Lord’s Second Home
This part of the story, most of the outsiders or maybe even insiders don’t know.
As per the age-old tradition, once a year, Jagannath Bhagwan, Balabhadra, and Subhadra leave their respective abodes and head to Saraspur. Saraspur serves as the ‘mosals’ of the three deities. Their mother’s side of the family. The place where you would run to as a child for love and food. The deities halt there for a grand mahabhog feast prepared by the local community before heading back home by nightfall.
There’s an even sweeter detail hidden in this tradition: it’s believed the Lord’s eyes get slightly irritated at Saraspur from eating too much jambu (blackberries) and baur (plums). The seasonal fruits kids in Gujarat still snack on today. That’s why, days before the yatra, the temple performs a ritual called Netrotsav, gently covering the deities’ eyes as if treating them, exactly the way your grandmother would fuss over you after you ate too many raw mangoes at your nani’s house.
It’s this warmth. The idea that Ahmedabad isn’t just a stop on Lord Jagannath’s calendar but family, that makes the city celebrate this day with such devotion.
The Rath Yatra Everyone Knows: Jamalpur to Saraspur (The Original, 149 Years Old)
This is the great spectacle where there are helicopter displays, 30,000-plus policemen, the Pahind Vidhi ceremony conducted by the chief minister, sweeping the roads before the entrance of the chariots, and lakhs of devotees on an 18-kilometer-long path through the old city.

If you’re in the walled city of Khadia, Kalupur, Shahpur, Raipur, or Manek Chowk. This is your Rath Yatra, and honestly, it’s an experience worth showing up for even once, just for the elephants, the akhadas doing their martial arts routines, and the sheer scale of the crowd.
The Rath Yatra That Few People Know about: The Shyamal-to-ISKCON-Temple Rath Yatra by ISKCON
Are you living in West Ahmedabad? Then Shyamal, Anand Nagar, Ambawadi, and the Satellite belt are your places. There is no need for you to go to the old city at all. ISKCON is doing its Rath Yatra on the same day in the same way, but of course, on a small scale.

Starting Point: Shri Bileshwar Mahadev, Shyamal Crossroads
Route: Anandnagar Road → Prernatirth Road → Anand Niketan School → Ramdevnagar Ending Point: ISKCON Temple Bonus: Dinner Prasadam for everyone who joins
This is the community-based and walkable form of the celebration: kirtans, dancing, chanting, and a free meal at the end. If you have never held a chariot rope in your entire life, then you should participate in this event for a fun experience within your own community.
The Third One: Bhadaj
And then there’s the Rath Yatra that is much quieter and local, which passes through the Bhadaj area. The Rath Yatra that doesn’t make it to the television screens but is very dear to the hearts of all those people who have been following it since their childhood. While it does not receive all the attention of helicopters and the 18-kilometre procession of Jamalpur, the Rath Yatra that passes through the Bhadaj area is equally revered by the locals and has its own procession and its own way of showing devotion.
So Which Rath Yatra Should You Actually Go See?
- Want the full spectacle: Elephants, akhadas, lakhs of people, 149 years of tradition? Head to Jamalpur early morning.
- Want something closer to West Ahmedabad, with dinner included and a lot less chaos? Catch the ISKCON Shyamal Rath Yatra at 4 PM.
- Live around Vadaj? Don’t sleep in your own neighbourhood’s yatra. Check with the local temple for the day’s exact plan.
Whichever site you decide to visit, make sure you have good footwear on, keep yourself hydrated, set out early if you are going to Jamalpur, and do not forget to enjoy the Mahabhog Prasad if you are anywhere close to Saraspur at midday.
