It’s that time of the year when the festivities have started, and if there is talk in your group about “Kaha jayenge is baar?” then worry not. Rather than heading to the same old Saputara, here are 7 out-of-the-box weekend getaway ideas from Ahmedabad, all within a comfortable 2-3-hour drive (mostly).
1. Champaner-Pavagadh: Gujarat’s Only UNESCO Site
Champaner-Pavagadh is located only 55 km away from Vadodara and just 7 km from Halol. This UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises two places. Pavagadh Hill with the holy temple of Kalika Mata and ancient settlements, and Champaner, an Islamic fortress city founded in the 15th century by Sultan Mahmud Begada. One can rarely find three types of architecture Hindu, Jain, and Islamic – preserved in their original plan anywhere in India.
Best season to visit: June to September when the monsoons make the Aravali foothills look green and verdant while making the ruins look even more spectacular against the backdrop of the clouds.
Sights worth visiting: Kalika Mata Temple on top of Pavagadh Hill (a ropeway is available for those who don’t wish to trek), followed by Jami Masjid. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful mosques in Gujarat due to its lotus designs, domes, and jalis. One must not miss visiting Saat Kaman, which was once a military building with spectacular views of the surrounding plainlands.

2. Silvassa: The Green Escape
About six to seven hours away, there is Silvassa. 4. Igatpuri: Monsoon Hill Station Magic
Igatpuri is a town that comes alive during the monsoon season due to its location on the highway between Nashik and Mumbai: hills shrouded in mist, rushing waterfalls, and overflowing lakes everywhere. This is the time when the hills around make it worth visiting and are lush green due to the rain.
What to see nearby: Head to Camel Valley for its 1,000-foot waterfall and cloud-covered viewpoints or Bhatsa River Valley for panoramic views that come alive in the rains. Vihigaon Waterfall is another crowd favourite for a quick trek and a dip, and if you’re up for some history, Tringalwadi Fort makes for a scenic monsoon trek.
Stay: Camel Valley Resort is an excellent choice. Situated directly behind the Camel Valley, the resort is noted for its views of the lake and mountains, swimming pool, and proximity to the area’s waterfalls.
5. Don Hill Station: Gujarat’s Highest Hill Station
Higher than Saputara and way less crowded, Don Hill Station in the Dang district is a hidden gem for monsoon lovers, best explored between July and September when waterfalls are in full flow. Since Don has barely any stay options, base yourself in Saputara (around 50 km away) and make it a day trip.
